This wool dress is particularly suitable for depictions of Anglo-Saxon, Viking or early medieval characters.
Based on historical models, this dress is made in a classic rectangular and triangular cut. Its shape and style make it an extremely versatile item of clothing. It can be worn as an overdress or under a Viking apron dress (also known as a smock).
The dress is made from a high-quality wool blend fabric in broken diamond twill. The threads are dyed black and blue, giving the fabric a beautiful diamond pattern. Twill fabrics are more flexible than plain weaves, making them more comfortable to wear and giving them a beautiful drape and movement.
The body of the dress consists of rectangular panels with side yaws that give the skirt more width. It has a keyhole-style neckline and set-in sleeves. The hem and sleeve ends are finished with a double turned-in hem. The neckline is finished with a facing made from the same fabric and stitched in place. The inside seams are serged (overlocked) and the armholes are also topstitched. All seams were sewn by machine; however, due to the matching thread and fabric color, the machine stitching is hardly noticeable.
Twill weaves can be traced back archaeologically to the Iron Age. Wool was widely used and is the most historically authentic fabric for clothing from a wide range of depictions from the Dark Ages, the Anglo-Saxon, Viking and medieval eras. Wool was not only readily available, it also has many properties that make it an ideal clothing fabric to this day:
- Wool fibers store air and therefore have an insulating effect and keep you warm
- Wool is breathable and provides comfortable warmth without overheating
- Wool warms even when wet and repels water - ideal for rainy weather
- Although not waterproof, wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture before it feels wet - so you stay dry for longer
- Wool is hard-wearing and inherently flame-retardant and therefore safer to wear than polyester, e.g. campfires during historic times. For example, for campfires during historical events.
Material: 80% wool, 20% nylon
Care instructions: Wool is naturally breathable and odor-resistant. For care, hand wash or spot clean with mild wool detergent and lay flat to dry to retain its shape. Do not put in the washing machine, do not spin or tumble dry.
