The historical model for this Viking cross pendant comes from a private collection and dates from the 10th to 11th century AD.

Crucifixes with this depiction of Jesus have Byzantine origins and are not atypical of the late Viking Age. They were worn in particular by the eastern Vikings, the Rus and Slavs.
Cross pendants with a depiction of Jesus in a blessing gesture were intended both as a profession of faith and as a protective amulet.
