The tree of life (also known as the tree of life or world tree) is a widespread symbol and mythical motif in many cultures. The tree of life is part of the mythology of many peoples and is an ancient symbol of cosmic order. The Vikings knew it under the name Yggdrasil.

It stands as the world axis at the center of the world. Its roots reach deep into the earth, its tops touch or carry the sky and connect the three levels of heaven, earth and the underworld.
